Personal interpretation of chosen artist - Jenny Saville

This is my first observational drawing of a large pair of scissors in fineliner on paper. I chose to darken the outline to exagerrate a more animated illusion of the image. As I have previously focused on drawing images on a small scale I decided to challenge myself and enlarge my drawings so I can show I can interperet fine detail into the piece. Using a fineliner helped achieve greater detail than other mediums I have used previously. I chose to use fineliner because I had written in my "things to improve" that i need to expand my range of mediums I use. I believe this worked well as it was, again, a challenge to myself to use a fineliner over such a large area which took time and a steady hand due to the straight lines. Instead of drafting this piece with a pencil first like I usually do, I began straight away with the pen so my mistakes couldn't be removed which shows tactics used by Saville as all her construction marks and sketched lines are visible.

From the outline as a starting point, I decided to introduce tone. I did this by using scribbles, the more smaller and concentrated the scribble, the darker the tone. Then I introduced shadow, but only in random areas, by drawing repeated straight lines. I looked back at Saville's piece "Stare", and noticed she repeats specific features to give an illusion of movement. I chose to do the same to make the scissors look as if they were opening and closing. To add to the image and to show the coreect style i added construction lines and boxes to draw attention to certain areas of the image. I chose scissors as my observational drawing as this reflects Saville's 'distortion' message. In her pieces she shows distorted faces and bodies, mostly to do with surgery. Scissors are used as a tool during surgery so adding the illusion of blood (red ink) shows the damage that can be done by the tool.
